| Founded in 2007 by Cheryl Lovelace, a former Financial Advisor, Footprint was born after her need to take a "step" in the right direction. Her initial inspiration came by surfboard shaper supplier, Brian Gagliana from Greenlight Surf Supply. Greenlight uses a special bamboo fabric (as resin reinforcement) in making environmentally responsible surfboards. Yet the comfort & softness of this new textile was undeniable for just surfboards! So after an initial pair of bamboo socks forewent rigorous testing in the field (trail runs, mountain biking, skiing, gym and at work), Footprint designed their line for active lifestyles. In building Greenlight surfboards or worn as silky soft apparel by Footprint, bamboo turns out to be a magical ingredient. It even joined these two entrepreneurs in marriage ;)

We are happy to announce our latest addition to our sustainable sock line, Coconutz! Utilizing an innovative technology from coconut shells, Cocona was born and is seen in many high performance gear brands now.
The particular bamboo we source (1200 species out there!) is sensationally soft when woven into clothing as viscose. Viscose from Certified Organic Bamboo hosts all the qualities desired for athletic socks and base layers and is a sustainable resource; good for our health and our environment. As avid outdoor-sports people from the Northeast, we understand the significance of our socks & undergarments to keep us comfortable for optimal performance.
Fox News 2/14/08: "Fabric made sourced from bamboo has a silky texture, environmentalists say. According to the National Geographic Green Guide, bamboo is an "a priori" eco-friendly material because it's naturally pest-resistant, requires little water, is amazingly regenerative and known to grow a foot a day. Bamboo also has a much lighter environmental impact than pesticide-laden conventional cotton and petroleum-derived nylon and polyester synthetics. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), conventional cotton consumes more water than any other agricultural commodity. Nitrogen-heavy fertilizer runoff from cotton fields feeds oceanic "dead zones" that deprive water of oxygen and kill fish. Seven of the top 15 pesticides used on U.S. cotton crops are deemed by the EPA to be potential or known human carcinogens. Industrial production of synthetic fibers releases lung-damaging pollutants such as nitrogen and sulfur oxides, particulates, carbon monoxide and heavy metals into the air. Manufacturing of most fabrics also releases climate-warming carbon dioxide into the air. Not so with bamboo."

Footprint apparel is designed & assembled locally in PA from components made locally, within the USA & China, where the bamboo grows. We choose partners in manufacturing who share our values and provide a caring, sweatshop free workplace for all employees. The overseas factory is third party audited using the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) Monitoring system, which is based on the labor standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

and it takes many forms. As it applies to making products, we work hard to
source sustainable materials and use processes that are less harmful to the
Earth without compromising quality. Because to us, quality is not only how well
a product performs and holds up, but also how it's made.
Footprint takes the 3 Rs to heart in our daily routine:
Reduce - hangtags double as our biz cards, patent pending Footprint Sock Hangers (made from biodegradable corn in USA) reuse as bag clips
Reuse - shipping boxes, hangers, hangtags, cardboard into signs and displays
Recyle - 100% PCW paper is used for office, invoices, signs, biz cards, and if we cant reuse it, we make sure it gets in the blue bin
